Dither
In digital recording systems, it is the addition of random noise at a very low level, before the signal is quantized. Its purpose is to de-correlate the quantization error from the signal, and in doing so, it allows the encoding of signals well below the digital noise floor. The result will be improved resolution of the signals being recorded.
